A gift card isn't a gift but a note that says: I didn't know, go find something yourself. The difference isn't the amount, it's the evidence that someone thought of you while you weren't there. A voucher, by definition, can't provide that evidence.
I know that sounds harsh. I've given plenty of them myself, with exactly the excuse you might be thinking right now: at least they'll pick something they like. Sounds reasonable. But honestly. Can you remember a single gift card you've ever received? Yet the book someone chose for you, with that one line written inside, you remember precisely.
What does a good gift actually say?
"I saw this and thought of you" is the entire magic. That sentence carries information: someone knows you, and thought of you at a moment when they didn't have to.
It doesn't have to be expensive. A pack of stroopwafels from the good bakery beats a fifty-euro voucher with ease, as long as it shows you know she can't stay away from them. That's also why a handwritten card often beats an expensive parcel: the effort is visible.
So why do we give them anyway?
Not out of laziness, but out of time pressure. Most gift cards are bought the evening before, or worse, the morning itself at the petrol station next to the flowers. In that moment the voucher isn't your choice. It's the only option left. Postpone the decision long enough and you end up deciding nothing.
When is a gift card actually fine?
Some people genuinely love a voucher. Teenagers, for one, would rather you didn't choose. Fine. The difference is whether the voucher is a choice or an escape route. A deliberately chosen voucher for the right person is thoughtful. The same voucher because it's quarter to ten at night and the birthday is tomorrow, that's something else. You can feel it too.
Start earlier, that's all
With a two-week head start, almost anyone is a good giver. There's time to see something and think of someone, instead of panic-writing an amount on a card. That head start is exactly what we automate. The thought stays yours, we just make sure you have it in time.
Not sure what to write? Example messages per relationship are in what to write on a birthday card.
